GERD
What is GERD?
Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a condition wherein the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly. This then allows stomach contents to reflux, or come back up into the esophagus.
GERD can be harmful if left untreated because the continuous flowing back of gastric juices may irritate the lining of the esophagus. As such, GERD may lead to more serious illnesses such as esophagitis (inflammation and swelling of the lining of the esophagus), esophageal strictures (narrowing of the esophagus) and esophageal cancer.
You CAN prevent GERD by listening well to its symptoms – primarily heartburn – and
making some lifestyle changes. Do not abuse alcohol and indulge in fatty foods
only in moderation. If you are already experiencing continuous heartburn, consult
a doctor immediately.
